The Enchanter (2008)

Over 30 years ago the neighborhood of Yemin Moshe in Jerusalem underwent a process of gentrification. The original inhabitants were bought out of their homes and the once lively streets became a “ghost neighborhood” owned mostly by diplomats who spend most of their time abroad. Projected on the walls of these typical Jerusalem stone houses are video images of the now so absent children.

The sounds of their shrill voices fill the empty streets as the audience arrives to see the performance. A sinister looking violinist dressed as a dusty clerk charms the children away. As the audience begins to follow him he leads the children through the dark alleys. The procession ends with this "pied piper" leading the children over the edge of the last house, leaving the audience in the dark and silent streets of the beautiful and abandoned neighborhood.

“The Enchanter” is a site-specific live performance/multimedia installation created by artists Jonathan Shohet, Lior Lerman and Saray Levin.

The work was commissioned by the “Train Theater” in Jerusalem, for their 2008 International Puppet Theater Festival, as part of a “Public Works” festival event, where artist were invited to create site specific works in the Yemin Moshe neighborhood.

The music was composed by Giory Politi, and performed by Nori Yaacobi / Ayelet Lerman.
