Laika - Eulogies and Prophecies (2010 - 2011)

“Laika : Eulogies and Prophecies” is an ongoing series of live theater performance/video installations, originally conceived by Lior Lerman.
This second installment was created by artists Lior Lerman, Jonathan Shohet and Ran Nahmias. The Show was produced in 2010 by “HaZira Performance Art Arena”, Jerusalem, and was also funded by the Israel Lottery Council for the Arts.

This documentation is of the show’s premiere performances at the “Yafo 23″ art gallery in Jerusalem, March 2011.

A round table covered in white books stands in the middle of the room. Once seated around the table a single member of the audience is invited to pick the first card. Each card chosen prompts Laika to open a different book. Each book in this vast encyclopedia contains a short poetic article, revealed to the audience through pop ups, video projections and through live music. Between one card and another, Laika recounts the tail of her heroic journey to outer space back in the year 1957. The books open as if by magic. Laika controls them with strings that run under- neath the table, turning the table into a huge marionette. Each story that emerges from the encyclopedia is a faint echo of Laika’s own voyage into the future. Laika collects little souvenirs from each article, and carries them with her towards her impending launch to a place where no man has gone before.

Also performing is Gai Sherf.
